Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is a type of artificial intelligence that can learn and perform many different tasks like a human being. Unlike today's AI systems, which are designed for specific tasks, AGI would be flexible, adaptive, and capable of reasoning across multiple domains.

Narrow AI vs. AGI

Current AI is often called "narrow AI" because it specializes in one activity such as language translation, image recognition, or playing chess. These systems are powerful but limited. They cannot easily transfer knowledge from one field to another.

Generalization ability

AGI aims to overcome this limitation through generalization ability. Generalization means applying learned knowledge to new and unfamiliar situations. Humans naturally do this every day. For example, someone who learns mathematics can use similar reasoning to understand physics or engineering. AGI would need this same capability to adapt and solve new problems efficiently.

Common sense knowledge

Another essential component of AGI is common sense knowledge. Humans understand basic facts about the world through experience, observation, and interaction. We know that fire is hot, glass can break, and heavy objects are difficult to carry. Most current AI systems struggle with this type of everyday reasoning.

Without common sense, AI can produce answers that are technically correct but unrealistic or impractical. AGI would need to understand physical reality, social behavior, cause and effect, and human intentions to interact safely and intelligently with people.

What AGI would combine

Researchers expect AGI to combine several abilities, including learning, reasoning, memory, planning, communication, adaptation, and decision-making. Such systems could transform healthcare, education, science, agriculture, and many other industries.

Where we stand today

Although modern AI technologies are advancing rapidly, experts generally agree that true AGI has not yet been achieved. Today's systems still lack deep understanding, reliable reasoning, and robust common sense.

AGI remains one of the biggest goals in artificial intelligence research. If successfully developed, it could become one of the most important technological breakthroughs in human history.
